My experience with the people hive
my name is Philippa George from the people hive I started going to the people hive in august 2022 and since then the people hive helped me to make new friends and have fun with a wide variety of activities from rambles to diners club to coffee and cake! I enjoy them all and, in the rambles, we have done a huge variety of different routes and squires cafe has been a popular place for the coffee and cake and my favourite restaurant for diner’s club is little Venice in Whitton. I love the food there and the staff are always so friendly and welcoming to us whenever we go there. When I take part in the activities it makes me feel happy as I am with friends and lovely volunteers!
Then from summer 2023 I started being a volunteer in couple of activities which gave me a new sense of responsibility as I had a role of helping the other participants to ensure they have a good time on the activity! when I volunteer at the diner’s club, I write down what everyone wants to have and help pay the money at the end.
When I volunteer at the activities, I volunteer at it makes me feel more confident and prouder to help others to ensure they have a good experience at the activities that they take part in.
I also got to join the ukulele band on Monday pub night thanks to the sessions at the people hive to teach me and others how to play ukulele and I got my bronze award for it, and I hope I can work towards silver!
I hope you all enjoyed hearing about my role and experience with the people hive and if you are looking for lots of different fun activities to do then come to the people hive and you can join in the fun too!
I have been Philippa and thank you for listening goodbye!
Hello everyone.
My name is Robert, and I have additional needs. I’m proud to be part of The
People Hive. I work there, and I also take part in lots of the social activities — and I absolutely love it!
The People Hive is much more than just a place to go during the day. It’s a place where I feel accepted for who I am. It’s where I’ve made real, meaningful friendships. It’s where I’m trusted to do important work, and where I know that what I do makes a difference. Being part of The People Hive makes me feel confident, happy, and like I’m part of something that truly matters.
Before I joined The People Hive, I sometimes felt left out. It was hard to find places where I felt like I really belonged. But now, I feel included, supported, and valued every single day.
We do lots of brilliant things. One of the main things we do is run a shop — and I love working there. It gives me responsibility and helps me learn new skills, like handling money, organising stock, and talking to customers. It feels great to be trusted and to know I’m helping keep the shop going.
We also do art, which I really enjoy because it lets me express myself. I can use colours, paints, and different materials to be creative. Art helps me relax and focus, and I always feel proud of what I’ve made.
We play games together — which is not just fun but also good for working as a team, taking turns, and thinking in new ways. And of course, there’s music and dancing, which always brings lots of energy and joy.
I have recently started volunteering at activities for The People Hive, I help set everything up for the relaxation sessions and I also help every week at the book club, it make me feel good to help others.
And one of my favourite things? All the laughing! There’s so much fun and happiness at The People Hive. We support each other, we cheer each other on, and we always make sure that everyone is included.
The People Hive is a fun place, but it’s also a place that gives people like me purpose. It helps us grow in confidence, learn new things, and feel proud of what we can do. It gives us a voice.
Thank you.
My Volunteering
My name is Stefi Dryja and I volunteer at a primary school in Whitton called St Edmond’s, I went there as a child. I listen to year 1 and year 2 children read. The days I go into the school are Monday and Tuesday afternoons.
I am also a client at The People Hive and I have done lots of different activities with them, for example:
diners clubs, film night, mosaic workshops, boat trips etc. I have made lots of friends doing the different activities.
I am also a volunteer at The People Hive. My role there is to run a group called Chill and Chat, this takes place on Friday afternoons. In this session we do quizzes and discuss the questions as a group. We also have cups of tea and biscuits but we ask the group to make a donation to the People Hive by putting money into a charity box.
The reason I do the volunteering is because I enjoy helping people and it makes me feel really happy and it is rewarding too, e.g. when I am volunteering at St Edmond’s it is really rewarding when the children manage to read and make sense of what they are reading about. In September when the year 1 children start school they need a lot more help and support from me but by the time Easter comes they understand what they are reading about and I am able to just sit and listen to them read. This makes me feel really happy because the children have understood what the words mean in their books.
I also really enjoy Chill and Chat because it’s a relaxing session and I enjoy talking about the quiz questions with the rest of the group.
