DG Case Study

D is a 23 year old young man who is on the autistic spectrum. D suffers from extreme anxiety especially around changes and new things. D lives at home with his mum and dad. D is verbal but is reluctant to communicate with speech.

D was due to leave college in 2018 and his family and support staff were looking for things for him to do once he left. They discovered the The People Hive Dance Act activity and made arrangements with his college for him to come along to try the activity supported by his college staff. Initially D did not actively take part in the sessions. He hid behind a pillar and watched for several weeks, not wanting to engage on any level.

Eventually, with the support of the highly skilled Dance Act and college staff, D slowly began to take part in the sessions. After a few months D took part in the end of term performance, successfully playing a part and engaging fully.

His mum and dad told us they never envisaged that D would be able to not only join in the sessions but take part in a performance in front of an audience.

PN case study

P is an older man of around 70 years of age . P has Asperger Syndrome. P lives in his own flat and is a very capable man but suffers from extreme anxiety. P loves music and enjoys walking. P enjoys attending our monthly Singalongs and going to musical performances with the People Hive.

P needs lots of reassurance and relies on our staff to support him to join in with our activities by offering a calming and capable presence. P takes part in our monthly rambles and although a little slower than some in the group enjoys spending some one-to-one time with the volunteers who support our walks.

P has struggled with social isolation in the past but his carer is delighted that he can now participate in things in the community with people who accept him for who he is.
