Client Activities

Activities

The People Hive offers a wide range of activities for people with learning disabilities. We have lots of weekly and monthly activities including a singalong, rambles and walks, pub nights, film nights, meals out, a book group and a dance group. In addition we offer one-off activities such as day trips to London, visits to local places of interest such as Hampton Court Palace, the Wetlands, Brentford Musical Museum and many more. We also offer overnight trips ranging from a couple of nights to a week.

Very supportive, helpful and friendly

- about our staff

All our activities are based on suggestions and feedback from our clients who come up with innovative, accessible and cost-friendly ideas. We try to keep our costs as affordable as possible offering many activities at just £5. We have to cover our costs as we don’t receive any external funding for our activities programme but are able to keep our prices affordable because of the support of a wonderful team of volunteers.

I just love it cos it gets me out of the house. When my husband was ill it made me feel I wasn’t alone. It’s great to be with my friends.

- about our weekly pub night

Our activities are all led by experienced members of staff and supported by our volunteers. We aim to have a ratio of around 1 member of staff to 3 clients – it all depends on where the activity is taking place and how many clients we have doing the activity.

We aim to ensure that all our activities are accessible to people with mobility difficulties and are always on the look-out for accessible venues, both restaurants and places to visit. Sometimes this isn’t possible but we really do try our best!

The safety and wellbeing of our clients is our number one priority. We have policies and procedures in place to ensure that all our staff and volunteers are fully informed and know what to do should an issue arise. For all activities there is an on-call member of staff whose number is given on the information sheets we send out for each activity so everyone knows who they should contact if needs be.

I enjoyed making all the different dishes and spending time with my friends.

- about our baking days

Whilst our Activity Programme is about offering fun things for people to do, underlying every activity are learning opportunities. We encourage our clients to be as independent as they can be by involving them in working out how to get to places using public transport, communicating with their group about any choices that need to be made, ordering their own drinks and food and supporting each other whether by allowing people extra time to participate in a conversation or holding open a door for someone who uses a wheelchair.

The whole thing, especially the Chinese meal and the sightseeing. I really enjoyed the karaoke. And not forgetting the hotel, including the comfy beds and cappuccinos.

- about a trip to York

S is becoming much more sociable and active since joining in the People Hive activities. It gives him a sense of independence and support from outside the family.

The Cabbage Patch is a great place for the pub night. Their staff are really friendly and helpful. It is a safe place for people to go where they feel supported but are able to enjoy being in an ordinary setting, not somewhere like a hall!
